Plum Blossom 2000

Plum Blossom 2000
Cheongchun (original title)
1h 58min | Drama | 14 October 2000 (South Korea)

Storyline:

Teenage hormones are difficult to be restrained. High school senior, Jayo is seduced into his first sexual experience by classmate Hara, who eventually kills herself when he ignores her. Since then, he immerses himself in loveless sex until he meets cheerful nurse, Namok. Meanwhile, his pal Seuin has developed a crush on his teacher, which is socially taboo. PLUM is a tender coming of age story about two teenage boys who embrace growing pains in a hard way.

User review:

Plum Blossom is primarily about two schoolmates, Se-in and Jay-ho, and their transformation to manhood from the naivete associated with the late teens. Jay-ho is at first very shy about sex, but after his first very emotionally draining experience, he comes to treat sex in a very physical and emotionless manner. Se-in, on the other hand, falls in love with an older woman and seems incapable of accepting the reality that there can be no relationship between the two; his love for the woman pre-empts any deep feelings from developing with any other girls his age.

Within this basic premise, the film follows the two young men from high school to college, and it follows their exploits and heartbreaks along the way. The movie manages to tell a pretty fascinating story about two very realistic, albeit different, guys. As their friendship deepens, a very tight, and genuinely touching bond develops between the two. Their closeness is so believable that there are many moments you almost expect them (or even root for them) to start making love to one another rather than the women they have such little emotional regard for. In fact, there is a homo-erotic undercurrent running throughout the film, both in terms of the relationship between the two males and in the way their bodies are sensually filmed. Se-in even at one point states to his friend that they are essentially one person living in two separate bodies.

There is a point about 15 minutes before the end where I think the movie would have been better off stopping. Instead it continues on to a more dramatic climax, which I think took away a bit of the film’s charm. Nevertheless, Plum Blossom is an intriguing and different take on the growing up theme and is well worth checking out.

Storyline:

Two unpopular teenagers, Gary Wallace and Wyatt Donnelly, fail at all attempts to be accepted by their peers. Their desperation to be liked leads them to “create” a woman via their computer. Their living and breathing creation is a gorgeous woman, Lisa, whose purpose is to boost their confidence level by putting them into situations which require Gary and Wyatt to act like men. On their road to becoming accepted, they encounter many hilarious obstacles, which gives the movie an overall sense of silliness.

User review:

One of the best fantasy/sci-fi movies ever. Also a good 80’s flick. A lot of very funny jokes and laughs. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith do a good job playing nerds and are hilarious. Kelly LeBrock as the cyber girl Lisa, is hot. A feel good 80’s movies written by the master John Hughes. A must see. They wouldn’t be able to make a movies like this these days. I love the 80’s.

That's What I Am 2011

That’s What I Am 2011
PG | 1h 41min | Comedy, Drama, Romance | 29 April 2011 (USA)

Storyline:

A coming-of-age story set in 1965 that follows 12-year-old Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a bright student who, like most kids his age, will do anything to avoid conflict for fear of suffering overwhelming ridicule and punishment from his junior high school peers. Everyone’s favorite teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris), pairs Andy with the school’s biggest outcast and social pariah, Stanley, aka “Big G” (Alexander Walters), on a critical term project. Sporting thick orange hair, a head too big for his body and ears too big for his head, “Big G” has been the object of ridicule since grade school. Before long, Andy will learn that there was truly a method behind Mr. Simon’s madness as to why he teamed these two up. As the story unfolds, Mr. Simon finds himself the target of a malicious rumor after Principal Kelner (Amy Madigan) suspends a school bully for brutally beating up a female classmate whom he thinks has “cooties.” When Andy watches “Big G” fearlessly confront the school bully, a series of events are triggered which change the lives of both young men – and their teacher – forever. Much to Andy’s surprise, “Big G” is a brilliant, kind, tolerant and decent human being who has more dignity than anyone Andy has ever encountered.

Motion Picture Rating (MPAA)
Rated PG for thematic material throughout, language and some bullying

User review:

There are so many “coming of age” stories out there now so do we really need another one? Yes, if it’s done well and That’s What I Am gets my vote for another addition to the genre.

Right of the bat the opening narration and the time setting reminded me of The Wonder Years, an excellent coming of age series set in the 60s. I felt I was in familiar territory and wondered if this would follow the episodes of TWY, where an older Kevin would narrate a particular episode in his young life which ended with a valuable lesson being learned. I wasn’t to be disappointed as there are quite a few lessons this movie teaches: prejudice, courage, dignity, friendship, honour and tolerance.

The story’s about a young “cool” kid being paired off with a social outcast, something which he’s not very happy about. It might not sound like the most interesting premise and one would think that the movie would focus on their blossoming friendship but that’s far from the truth. Instead, the story uses that point to focus on other issues in the 60s, issues that are mainstream and accepted today as norms but back then were new, and something to fear. There are several light moments, some dark ones, and some tear inducing moments that come at the right time and are just enough to make you smile and be glad that you watched the movie.

The acting is very good all round. Ed Harris, the most known name in the movie, is excellent in his somewhat supporting role. And that’s the way it should be because the movie’s about the kids in the school and not him, just in the way the movie’s not all about Andy and Big G. One thing seems to remain the same…the social classes in schools back then were no different to those today. Sure, there were no EMO kids, no Goths, or preppy kids but there were still distinctions that are not so different from what we see in modern set teen high school movies.

All in all, this is definitely one to watch. If you liked The Wonder Years then you should definitely watch this movie as you’ll feel right at home. This is one coming of age movie that will make you smile, and cry, and smile some more.

User review:

I have also been watching this movie since I was in grade one! I fell in love with it, and so did all the females in the family! We have watched it way over 200 times, know all the words, and songs, and even the dance moves (heehee)! One time we had to bring it back to the videostore, after watching it non stop for 2 days, and we were wishing we kept it. So we were flipping channels, and what should appear? The (original)Pirates of Penzance!!! Now, almost 25 years later we introduced my 3 year old niece to it. She LOVES it! She has watched it at least 3 times a day over a 2 week period. She’s learning the words and singing the songs…and just absolutely adores Happy Ending! So the tradition lives on….

For I am the Pirate King, I don’t buy this orphan thing, we’ll go away without dismay, but we’ll be returning….
