1952: Bishop Bilodeau visits a québécois prison to hear the confession of a boyhood friend jailed for murder 40 years ago. The inmates force the prelate to watch a play depicting what really happened in 1912. We meet him as a young man, strait-laced, intent on convincing Simon (now the convict) to join the seminary with him. Vallier, the son of an impoverished and eccentric countess, loves Simon and he is drawn to Vallier, but in fear of his father’s wrath for kissing Vallier during drama rehearsal, Simon courts a visiting Parisian, asking her to marry him. Vallier, encouraged by his mother, attends the engagement party to declare his love for Simon. And what does the watchful Bilodeau do?
Thorvald’s a typical high school kid finding his way, and he’s pretty impressed with his classmate, Ida, who seems to have already found her’s. Taking a cue from Ida’s energetic campaign to ban a competing school’s football team, the Redskins, until they change their oppressive name – Thorvald initiates an effort to change their own school’s mascot, the Viking, to something less offensive to Scandinavians. And he enlists the assistance of an elusive community organizer, a mischievously alert neighborhood kid and, of course, Ida – against the resistance of his parents, his classmates, and pretty much everyone else in town, including Ida’s giant boyfriend; the Captain of the Vikings football team. It’s a bit of a bumpy path for all, but there’s a decent message or two along the way as Thorvald and Ida become close.

A drama that follows the travails of the Pineda family in the Filipino city of Angeles. Bigamy, unwanted pregnancy, possible incest and bothersome skin irritations are all part of their daily challenges, but the real “star” of the show is an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as family business and living space. At one time a prestige establishment, the theater now runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. The film captures the sordid, fetid atmosphere, interweaving various family subplots with the comings and goings of customers, thieves and even a runaway goat while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.
